Crafts Council Touch Box - January 2012
New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham

Gemma was asked to come into New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham to explore the contents and concepts behind the Crafts Council Touch Boxes. Over two days she interacted with the general public to assist learning of craft through touch of the specific objects within the box. Although aimed primarily at the learning of young people, the opportunity to touch the objects was appealing to both children and adults alike.

She was also involved with a visit from local primary school St Andrews CofE who came to explore the boxes contents and learn about craft through touch.

The specific box was textiles related and contained a wide range of objects, including works by Ella Robinson and Suzanna Heron.

Info about the boxes here.

Fashion Fixers - April 2011
Community project aimed at encouraging fashion upcycling. Gemma helping local people to paint a giant postcard of Bracknell.

The Fashion Fixers event was devised by Sophie Williams (Reading Fine Art graduate and member of South Hill Park's Young Producers Forum,"Missed Out") as a way to encourage young people to get involved and learn about making their own fashion and upcycling old clothes. After workshops to create new fashion items from old clothes the creations were then exhibited and sold in the centre of Bracknell raising funds for Project 125.

Gemma was asked to devise and lead a community driven art activity outside the shop. The local people of Bracknell (including the mayor!) painted a giant postcard of their town and contributed messages to go the reverse.

The project was supported by ITV fixers and South Hill Park Arts Centre.

Workshops at All Saints Primary, Wokingham - March 2011
Workshops around the theme of water for Good Friday play, in association with Stage Fright

Gemma helped with two ideas devised by Stage Fright (a) for workshops that looked at the life of Jesus in the run up to Easter.

The year 4's created many different fish, from designs Gemma produced. These fish would then be later displayed and used in the annual Good Friday play Stage Fright produces in the town centre on Good Friday, this year containing stories from the bible about Water.

The Year 5's produced drawings of the days of creation which were then placed into empty plastic water bottles. Emphasizing the theme of water running through this years play as well as highlighting themes of recycling. The finished products were then displayed in the Good Friday shop.

6 week residency at Ashmead Combined School, Buckinghamshire - Feb/March/April 2011
In association with the Creative Partnerships scheme, producing my own work for the school and teaching students

In February 2011 I was invited to join the years 3,4 and 5 at Ashmead Combined School, a primary school in Buckinghamshire.

For 6 weeks, 2 days a week I worked with the students and helped them create their own postcards.

First week was all about talking to all the Year 3,4,5 classes about my practice. With some really insightful and hilarious responses and comments.

Weeks 2 - 5 involved me helping the students and teachers learn how to use a biro to draw and shade with. Teaching 12 specially picked students from two classes the same techniques on a more one to one and consistent basis, allowing them to create their own giant postcards. Creating my own biro giant postcard drawing for the school and running an afterschool Art Club.

The final week was all about the final exhibition of the students work, both my students and the postcard work, but also many other artworks they had produced that term. I also had to finish my own artwork for the school.

Workshop with a group of young leaders - December 2010
Short art workshop with a group of Young Arts Leaders at The Piggott School, Wargrave, Berkshire

In association with Artsbeat and Jane Turner, Gemma was asked to come and talk about and deliver a simple art workshop to a group of young leaders from The Piggott School in Wargrave, Berkshire.

The young leaders are learning about how to lead drama and other arts activities for younger children. As a previous Young Leader herself Gemma was more than happy to give them a few pointers about how teaching art can differ from teaching drama and other activities and how anyone regardless of their ability can gain from creating art.

As well as giving them ideas about where they might find inspiration for their own art workshops and activities, she ran them through an activity designed to encourage group work and show creativity and creative differences .

Art Activities - September/October 2010
Four weeks of art activities with a group of children at St Mary's and St John's Parish Centre, Gorse Ride, Finchampstead

Working with the PAG (Performing Arts Group), Finchampstead, Berkshire, Gemma was asked to deliver after school art activities over four weeks to their group of 10-14 year olds from local social housing.

The activities included mask-making, self expression by painting on canvases, face painting and illustrating from stories and myth. Aimed to interact and build on Drama interests within the group as well as encourage both group and solitary work with Art, to build confidence in Art abilities and enjoyment of Art.

Painting on the canvases was a huge hit, with the children producing a range of artworks using simple poster paints, crayons, other art materials and a lot of enthusiasm. Final images produced included examples of Abstract Expressionism, Patterning, Representational and Non-representational Illustrative and Graphical imagery.

  Art Workshop - June 2010
Single session with both after school groups at St Mary's and St John's Parish Centre, Gorse Ride, Finchampstead.

Working in association with Jane Turner, Gemma was asked to run single art sessions with children from local social housing.

Working with the 5-9 year olds she encouraged a drawing session in the local community garden. Aiming to improve basic drawing skills and ability to see how an object is formed. As it was summer it was nice to get into an outside space and look closely at and appreciate the plants in their natural environment while drawing them.

Working with the 10-14 year olds they, in small groups, undertook a re-creation of a section of an image. Doing this from scratch they had to work on blank paper and draw the image as well as add colour through paint and other media. The original image was much smaller than the paper so they also had to scale their image section up by eye.

When the image was reassembled you could see not only a good representation of the original image but a range of creative output and styles. This activity encourages group work in Art as well as drawing and painting skills. It also highlights the positivity of differences in style and technique and encourages a creative approach.

CSAP (Crowthorne Summer Arts Programme) - Summer 2009
2 weeks of arts activities for young people in Crowthorne.

In summer 2009 Gemma joined Jane Turner and Philippa Berry to assist with the second week of arts activities in the CSAP.

The CSAP (running in 2008 and 2009) is a programme of activities including drama, singing and games for young people in Crowthorne in the summer holidays.

For 2009 the second week was based out on the Morgan Recreation Ground and was an informal free to come and go as you please event. As well as singing and drama activities it also included arts and crafts. Aimed at engaging the troubled youth of Crowthorne as well as generally the children of the area by bringing activities to a place where they usually hang out and encouraging interaction and conversation.
